The possum is a non-native, pervasive, destructive pest in NZ. It threatens both native bird life and the habitat of many natural species. Possums are also known to carry TB. Their numbers are vastly too high and there has been government-controlled culling for decades. Only in the last thirty years did someone get the clever idea to use the resulting fibre to make something useful. You might call it recycling.
